Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 due to its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now engineered to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, making it ozone-friendly. You can feel good about using this refrigerant in Buellton because it’ll help make your AC work efficiently, reliably and quietly, and deliver the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made anytime before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should think about upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is totally unavailable. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to operate your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Allstar Heating & Air Conditioning work with R-410A, so you know we have an AC or heat pump more suited to your needs. Be sure to refrain from using”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
